Günter Brus

The Billboards located on Seestrasse, the most frequented street in Bregenz, are an integral part of KUB's program, extending each exhibition into public space. 

The KUB Billboards reproduce individual photographs from the artist's series Selbstbemalung, from 1964. Günter Brus shows himself in a self-portrait. His face, shirt, and body are painted white, his eyes closed. The pictures look like impressions of a death mask. A black brushstroke runs down his mummy-like face. It is a scar that divides his skull. In the act of painting himself, Brus makes isolation , endangerment, injury, and existence apparent.
